How to Fold Socks

Have you been taking your socks for granted? We know. They’re so easy to ball up, mismatch, and throw into a drawer (or onto the floor, depending on who you are).  But think about it — socks keep you warm. They keep you dry. They cushion your feet when you run away from a bad date, or from another set of hefty bills. Your socks deserve to be treated with care. MeUndies knows socks, and we want to help you help them. Here are our top tips for folding socks.

How to Fold Ankle Socks

What are ankle socks? Ankle socks are compact, no-show ways to stay cozy under those cool sneakers you’re trying (but failing) to keep clean. But how do you fold something that stops at the ankle? We suggest the ‘ol lay and fold. Lay one sock on top of the other, and fold over the cuffs (AKA fold them in half, from toe to ankle). Then you can stack them according to color, or occasion, or material, or whatever works for you. Imagine opening a drawer of compact, flat-laying socks. We can’t think of a better way to start your day.

How to Fold Long Socks

Long socks are a little trickier than ankle socks because there’s more sock — double the sock, double the trouble. Think of your long socks as glorious French pastries that need to be folded and rolled into tasteful little balls. Start by laying one sock on top of the other. Then roll them, from tip to top, as tightly as you can. You can pack a bunch of these little guys into one drawer, maximizing space. This is a great technique for packing suitcases, as well.

How to Roll Socks

Speaking of rolling socks: Every sock-wearer must have a preferred sock-rolling method. It’s part of adulting.. If you’ve yet to find yours, don’t fear — we’re here to illuminate you to two great methods that will have you stop, dropping, and rolling socks right into your dresser drawer.

The Basic Roll

Look, there’s nothing wrong with being basic. Sometimes, the simplest things are the best. We’ve mentioned the Basic Roll a few times, and with good reason. Layering your socks and rolling them from one end to the other is an easy way to keep things organized. Plus, we’re all about caring for your socks, but we know that things get busy — AKA we don’t want to see you sitting at home on a Friday night and rolling your socks just because you read this blog.

The Ranger Roll

For those of you who are in the mood for a lot of rock and roll, there’s the Ranger Role. Used by stealth packing experts everywhere, the Ranger Roll is a foolproof way to fold even the most unruly of socks. Put one sock on top of the other, with the top one resting slightly lower than the bottom one. Tightly roll the socks from foot to top and then pull the pouch over the sock roll, like below:

Wearing Your Socks

You know how to fold your socks, but do you know how to wear them? We can’t have you wearing No Show socks with tall boots, or Cozy Socks with heels (although, that could be a look). Check out our post on how to wear different types of socks.

Wondering if you own too many pairs of socks? (Blasphemous!) Check out our guide on  “how many socks should i own.”. Once you’ve hit the number that works for you, it’s time to get folding.
