Today marks a pretty cool day: the International Day of Living Together in Peace. Established by the United Nations, it honors the global desire to live and act together, united in differences and diversity, in order to build a sustainable world of peace, solidarity, and harmony. This day is obviously super important any year, but this year—considering we’re all stuck inside with our families, partners, parents, children, dogs, chickens, gerbils, what have you—it seems to hit even closer to home (literally). So, we thought we’d share a little background on the holiday for all you history buffs, why it’s an important one for us at MeUndies, and why it might just be the reminder you need to survive yet another day with your quarantine crew.

History

When the United Nations started after World War II, they had one hefty goal: to achieve international cooperation for solving global problems by encouraging respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms without distinction to race, sex, language, or religion. Ultimately, they wanted to promote a culture of peace and non-violence across humanity, while also embracing the principle that peace is not merely the absence of conflict—it requires positive participation, mutual understanding, and cooperation. In 2017, the General Assembly named May 16 as the International Day of Living Together in Peace to remind us that joining together in a peaceful and united way is about accepting differences through the ability to listen to, recognize, respect, and appreciate others.

Why We Love It

At the MeUndies core, we’re about comfort—why goes way beyond Undies. Our mission is to help bring everyone personal comfort by encouraging acceptance, inclusivity, and self-expression. We truly believe that togetherness promotes positive change, and that our differences, when united, become our superpowers. All in all, we encourage our MeUndies fam to find inner and shared peace by embracing their authentic selves and those of others. So, a day that celebrates living together in peace by accepting what makes us unique? That’s a day we’re proud to support.

Why It’s Extra Relevant

Obviously, living at home in our new reality has been a challenge. No matter who you’re quarantined with (and this includes yourself), we’re all seeing new sides to each other. Plus, there’s added layers of anxiety, stress, anger, fear, and worry, and all these emotions are exploding around in houses we’re not allowed to leave. This makes for a tough situation—no question. So, we figured the International Day of Living Together in Peace is a good day to remind ourselves that, most likely, we truly do love those we’re stuck with. And though this situation isn’t ideal, it’s temporary. So take a deep breath, and try to bring a little of that peace and harmony back into your everyday lives. Make it more comfortable. And remember, our differences are what make us fascinating. Let’s learn to accept them.
