What to Wear on a Plane

If there’s one thing everybody loves, it's airplane travel. Waking up at 4am, middle seats, getting yelled at by TSA for forgetting to take out your laptop, it’s all super fun. Okay, we’re being cheeky here: As any 90’s-era stand-up comic will tell you, flying can be a pain in the butt. (And while we’re at it, what is the deal with airplane food?)

But with travel season approaching, there’s one way to make sure your next trip through the sky is like being on cloud nine — and that’s by choosing the right things to wear up there. Wearing comfy plane clothes can literally make even the longest flights to Tokyo or your cousin Derek’s wedding feel like a lil’ vacation in its own right. Sit back, stow your tray table, and enjoy our tips for picking the best outfit to wear on a plane.

What to Wear on a Plane?

Once you’ve figured out what to pack for a trip, the next step when planning any travel is to think about what to wear on the flight. Comfort is key, but just ‘cause you’re at 30,000 feet doesn’t mean you can’t also look fly! There are a few ways to dress cozy for the cabin, while still looking good for that cutie in Row 9.

Breathable Fabrics

A great trick to finding comfy airport outfits is choosing the most comfortable fabric. No one wants to be scratchy on a six-hour flight. Our signature MicroModal material is breathable, stretchy, and softer than a folksy pilot’s intercom voice. But if you’re more of the sprinting-through-the-terminal type, you can try our Breathe collection, which is lightweight, quick-drying, and perfect for staying fresh during travel. Whatever your needs are, breathable fabric makes flying a breeze, no matter how many screaming babies you’re surrounded by.

Loose-Fitting Clothing

“Extra legroom” is important when booking a seat, but it also applies to choosing good plane pants. Loose-fitting Loungewear can make the best travel outfits for long flights, like our Modal Wide Leg Pants: They’re super flowy while still feeling cute as a travel-size toothpaste. Or try our ultra-soft Joggers. They’re the relaxing kind of fit that will keep you snoozing right through the safety demonstration. We all know how a seatbelt works.

Layering

You’re a deep person who’s got layers. Your travel outfits should, too. Our snuggly Cardigan, for instance, is amazing for hard-to-predict temperature changes when flying. If you’re sitting in particularly icy airplane air-conditioning, bundle up even warmer with our French Terry Hoodie. You can peel it off on the hot tarmac and use it as a pillow! Dressing in layers can turn your early morning red-eye into a you-look-really-gorgeous-and-well-rested-eye.

What Not to Wear on a Plane

Now that we’ve covered what to wear on an airplane, let’s talk about some outfit choices to maybe avoid. Though as always, do whatever feels most comfortable. It’s your party and you’ll fly how you want to.

Avoid Anything Constricting

Airplane seats are cramped as is. It’s best not to add any more crampage by wearing clothes that are too tight. Anyone versed in the art of comfort knows that feeling loose and mobile is crucial to staying chill, on a long flight or otherwise. That’s why all MeUndies clothing is designed with your maximum comfort in mind. Throw on our softer-than-soft Undies and you’ll be equally comfortable roaming around the cabin as you are lounging and watching someone else’s iPad. Other people’s screens are way more interesting, anyway.

Avoid an Uncomfortable Bra

You know us, we think bras are uncomfortable. Our alternative? Bralettes. Like everything we make, our Bralettes come in sizes XS-4XL and plenty of fun colors and prints, so there’s something for every body. Try different styles, like our supportive U-Back, classic T-Back, or barely-there FeelFree Triangle. Compared to traditional bras, Bralettes are much comfier while still providing the gentle support you want. It’s like upgrading your intimates to first class.

Avoid Overdressing

It likely goes without saying, but that cumbersome evening gown and three-piece suit are probably not the best outfits to wear on a plane. We’re not trying to upstage the flight crew here. You can still look stylish while keeping it light and cas’, like wearing our famously soft Hoodie or Lounge Pants. However, if you’re dying to bring back the 1960’s with a full suit and tie, you do you!

Now that you know what to wear when traveling on a plane, you can focus on what actually matters: having an awesome vacay. Whether you’re an aisle or window person, dressing comfy will guarantee your next flight is a joy, and make you forget you’re hurtling through space at 500 mph. Have a great trip! Send pics!
